A Tale of Two Turkeys

On April 24, 2011, in Istanbul and Washington, we saw two very different Turkeys

.

In Istanbul, citizens of Turkey, under threat of prosecution and violence, courageously called for a truthful and just resolution of the Armenian Genocide.
Eren Keskin, a leader of the Human Rights Association Istanbul Branch, spoke of the need for recognition, repentance, and reparations for this crime.

In Washington, DC, allies of Ankara's policy of genocide denial celebrated in front of the Turkish Embassy during a silent vigil by local Armenians in memory of the Armenian Genocide.
They were later warmly welcomed into the Embassy.

As Americans, we need to decide where our government stands:
With the small but growing civil society movement within Turkey that condemns their government's denial of the Armenian Genocide and calls for truth and justice for this crime;

or on the side of Ankara's allies - genocide deniers who rejoice in the suffering of the Armenians and keep tightening their gag rule on U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

MONTEBELLO—Freeway signs directing drivers to the Armenian Genocide Martyrs’ Monument were installed Tuesday. The signs placed along the 60 freeway near the Garfield/Wilcox exits in Montebello.

On April 1, the State of California will officially hold an unveiling ceremony of the signs, following a reception will be held at the Montebello Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument at Bicknell Park. The event will be held at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Monument will become a historical landmark in 2015, coinciding with 100the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Armenian Rally at the French Senate to demand adoption of a law penalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide.

On October 12, 2006, French National Assembly passed a bill on criminalization of the Armenian Genocide denial. Recently, WikiLeaks published a cable quoting French President Nicolas Sarkozy as saying that the bill "will be buried in the Senate", what aroused Aznavour's indignation.

Clinton Visits Dzidzernagapert

It was, indeed, a first for a US Secretary of State to visit Dzidzernagapert Armenian Memorial Monument. What was, indeed, puzzling about the visit was that it was dubbed a “private” visit by one of the most visible—public—officials in the world.

While in Yerevan, Hillary Clinton visited Dzidzernagapert, laid a wreath and paused for a moment of silence in what the US Embassy officially described as “a sign of respect for the 1.5 million Armenians who lost their lives in 1915.”

AYF Confronts Azeri Diplomat at World Affairs Council Event

More than 150 members and supporters of the Armenian Youth Federation turned out at the Pacific Club on the evening of Thursday, March 4, to protest Azerbaijans Consul General of Los Angeles, Elin Suleymanov.
This demonstration was a testament to the will of the Armenian youth and sent a clear message to the Azeri consul that we will not allow his administration to spread its war rhetoric and propaganda, whether it be here in Los Angeles, or across the globe in Azerbaijan, said Jivalagian.
Our goal tonight was to have a two-front operation with the impact of our questions being bolstered by loud protests against Azerbaijans inhumanity from outside, explained Santikian. After the protests started, there wasnt a single person inside who didnt stop for a moment to think about the credibility of Suleymanovs claims.

Sarkisian Discusses Protocols, Genocide Recognition on Al Jazeera

YEREVAN –In an interview with the Al Jazeera News Network conducted on Feb. 12, Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian said he “absolutely” wants President Barack Obama to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

Answering a question about Obama’s campaign pledge to recognize the Armenian Genocide, Sarkisian said Obama had followed up on his pledge but “not to the extent he had promised before he became the president. But he stated unequivocally that he hasn’t changed his mind.” Responding to a follow-up question on whether Sarkisian wants Obama to use the word “genocide” in reference to 1915, Sarkisian said, “Absolutely.”

Speaking about the protocols, Sarkisian said it is the Turkish side that is stalling the process, noting that “as the leader of the political force which currently holds parliamentary majority, I rule out any possibility of the Armenian Parliament not ratifying the protocols if they are ratified by the Turks without preconditions.”

During the interview, Sarkisian reiterated that Russia and Armenia are “strategic partners” and that the Armenian American community serves as a bridge for good relations with the U.S.
